The Problem: NZ Landfills are filling up with used tyres

Did you know that in NZ every year there are 5 million used tyres discarded, and 70% of them end up in landfill?

That’s 25 million tyres over 5 years, 500 million over 10 years…the number blows up exponentially, and the majority of it is building up huge mountains of used tyres all around our beautiful country.

Every year more cars are hitting the road and the problem is only getting worse. These tyre mountains pose very real environmental dangers. The longer they sit there, the more dangerous they become, as tyres degrade they create massive fire risks. If they do catch fire, they let off toxic smoke, and when they come into contact with water, they leach toxic chemicals into the ground and water systems.

What Happens Next:

At Evashred we are capable of shredding mass amounts of used tyres. The problem then becomes, what do we do with the shredded waste?

As you may have gathered, we are passionate about diverting waste from landfill and finding unique recycling solutions to benefit the planet.

As a matter of personal and professional interest, at Evans Engineering we stay abreast of what is happening in our industry. Our team caught wind of a new plant that was being created in Auckland to deal with this tyre waste, but there was a period of time where the shredded tyres were going to landfill instead of being recycled.

The Solution: Ship it, recycle it, reuse it!

Evashred have a good relationship with a tyre recycler based in the Hawkes Bay and knew we could lend a hand and have the waste generated in Auckland diverted from landfill.

Our contribution in this case was to create a partnership between the new Auckland plant, and the Hawkes Bay tyre recycler.

Our tyre recycling friends in Hawkes Bay have a partnership with a large overseas company who now receive shredded tyre waste in 20-foot-long shipping containers from NZ, recycling the material and ensuring it is diverted from our landfills.

So, if you’re in need of shredded tyre waste removal, let us know and we’ll put you in touch with the right people.

Just don’t forget to tell them who sent you!
